Winter weather foils SPC championships
Co-championships awarded to
finalists; meets are canceled 01:48 AM CST on Sunday, February 15, 2004
The Southwest Preparatory Conference's winter championships scheduled
for Saturday were canceled because of inclement weather. Championships in
basketball, soccer, wrestling, swimming and diving at several locations in
North Texas will not be rescheduled. The teams that advanced to Saturday's finals in basketball and soccer
have been named co-champions. The wrestling and swimming and diving meets
were scheduled for Saturday. Hockaday athletic director Cindy Gough said the conference didn't want
to risk travel in the snowy weather, especially for schools traveling from
as far away as San Antonio, Oklahoma City and Tulsa. She said there would
also be difficulty in logistics coordinating hotel rooms and charter buses
for multiple teams. Gough said that there is little specialization in
sports in the SPC, and spring sports begin this week. Gough said the final decision was made about 11:30 a.m. Gough said
All-SPC honors for each sport, including wrestling, swimming and diving,
will be determined at a later date. "I have a real feeling for the swimmers and wrestlers who came down and
didn't even get a chance to compete," Gough said. "There's a lot of
disappointed people, and athletic directors, but that's not a tragedy.
Something happening on the road would have been a tragedy." Arlington Oakridge athletic director and boys basketball coach Kenny
Yates said he voted against canceling the championships. Oakridge was to
play St. Mark's. "In the afternoon, it looked like we could play it, but it was hard to
determine if we could do that in the morning," Yates said. "The kids had
no say in the weather or the decisions." E-mail rkretzschmar@dallasnews.com
